LEGAL GROUNDS...it's good and it's free. What a combination.
I have something new and free for you. My wife, Beverly, general practice attorney for 20 years, will be establishing "LEGAL GROUNDS" at The Coffee Gallery. That means she will be sitting, with coffee in hand, on Thursday evenings, and Saturdays and Sundays giving out free legal consultation & advice. No strings attached. These sessions will last approximately 30 minutes. You may have craved to ask a real lawyer a question or two but did not want to put out the bucks to rent him, or her, for an hour (minimum) in a stuffy law office. Now is your chance to meet in a neutral site where everyone is relaxed and you will have no monetary obligations. Also during times that are convenient for you and not necessarily at the convenience of the lawyer. Oh, the power in your hands.... Works for me.
You must have an appointment...Beverly Stane....(626) 578-0027... (her office) she will answer the phone or you can leave a phone number. Your call will be answered, or returned, by Beverly, a competent and non-threatening person. Remember, the number above is her downtown office. Not The Coffee Gallery. Only phone her office for appointments. Do not call the coffee house for a lawyer appointment. Meetings with Beverly will be at The Coffee Gallery. Is this clear? 1. Call her office for an appointment. 2. Meet her at the coffee house at the appointed time.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
ANNOUNCEMENTS & LISTINGS
The Stolen Sweets formed in 2005 with the intention of reviving the songs of 1930s sister act, The Boswell Sisters, whose deco-era music provided radio listeners a ray of hope during a truly dispiriting economic depression. Comprised of gorgeous vocalists Jen Bernard, Lara Michell and Erin Sutherland, guitarists Pete Krebs and David Langenes (both of whom sing) and double bass player Keith Brush, The Sweets' repertoire has expanded to include material from the 1920s -1940s. Their arrangements are still inspired by the Boswells' tight 3-part harmonies, frequent tempo changes and "knowing shrugs and raised eyebrows," but also incorporate gypsy jazz manouche accompaniment, reminiscent of Django Reinhardt. The Sweets’ recent exploits have included a headline performance at the “Boswell Centennial Celebration” in New Orleans, an exciting 6-country European tour and the honor of winning “Best of Art Beat” on National Public Television. Come see why people are flocking to see them light up a room with their vintage sound!

SLIGO RAGS....big time Irish act. An unruly mob. Bob Stane Says, “this is a money back, no questions asked if you are not thrilled act.” Bring friends. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles.
Two-time winners of the Orange County Music Award for Best Folk Band, this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After", currently garnering international airplay, was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guiness stout you just ordered at the bar...Sligo Rags really know their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz, and swing manage to sneak their way into the act as well.

RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE....With EVAN MARSHALL on magic mandolin....one of, if not "the" most historical Western bands in the world, The Riders Of The Purple Sage starred in films and radio for the pre-war days to today... Today's Riders, under the leadership of Cody Bryant, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are highly-skilled musicians-instruments include a five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, fiddle, steel guitar, bass, and drums and consummate vocalists. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound, they continue to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages. Todayâs Riders bring together hot swing riffs with smooth harmonies that, at the end of the show, leave the audience wanting more. Their sound and show makes you feel that all is well in the West. “TRIPPIN’ THE ‘60’S” IS BACK !!!
BARRY McGUIRE, “Trippin’ The 60’s,” with JOHN YORK.... Barry McGuire stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the Andy Williams Show as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar."
In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times.
Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire”.Currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties," John York is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned Folk Rock/Country Rock group, the Byrds. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band)……and many others. BILL EVANS & MEGAN LYNCH.....Bill Evans and Megan Lynch At Coffee Gallery Backstage, July 17th
Two of the world’s most acclaimed bluegrass musicians, San Francisco Bay Area-based bluegrass banjo player and Banjo For Dummies author Bill Evans and six-time National champion fiddler Megan Lynch make their southern California debut at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, previewing selections from their upcoming CD Let’s Do Something, produced by Steve Mougin from the Sam Bush Band.
A true banjo legend, bluegrass fans know Bill from his performances with Dry Branch Fire Squad, the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Peter Rowan, Tony Trischka and Maria Muldaur while Megan has graced the stage with such notables as 3 Fox Drive, country great Pam Tillis, Chris Stuart and Backcountry and the Chieftains. Together, their virtuosity on banjo and fiddle is to be expected. The surprise is in their superb vocal work, not only on traditional material but contemporary songs from Deb Tannen (The Weepies), Mark Simos (Alison Krauss), John Gorka, Van Morrison and others. Bill steps out from his normal bluegrass environment in this duo setting, performing not only on acoustic banjo, but also electric and MIDI banjo, guitar and resophonic guitar.
Bill is the author of the most popular banjo instructional book in the world today, Banjo For Dummies. His debut Rounder Records CD Native and Fine, featuring stellar work from fiddler Stuart Duncan, guitarist David Grier and mandolinist Mike Compton, won an Honorable Mention for Acoustic Instrumental Recording of the Year from NAIRD. His second CD, Bill Evans Plays Banjo, featuring dobro great Rob Ickes, bassist Todd Phillips and fiddler Darol Anger, made The Chicago Tribaune’s “Best Of The Year” list.
Northern California native Megan Lynch won her first National Fiddle Championship at age 8. Since then, she captured five more National titles, most recently in 2003 and 2004. She has toured with many of the brightest names in bluegrass music since relocating to Nashville several years ago. In addition, she is a renowned teacher who has taught at virtually every major bluegrass and fiddle camp in North America.
You can learn more about Bill by visiting www.nativeandfine.com. You can learn more about Megan by visiting www.fiddlestar.com. Hear live samples by visiting their My Space page at www.myspace.com/billevansandmeganlynch.
What they’re saying about Bill Evans and Megan Lynch….
"Bill Monroe said his Uncle Pen could make a fiddle talk and sing. I think Megan Lynch can make a fiddle talk, sing, laugh, cry, moan, whisper, tell a bawdy tale and then play all the roles from A Streetcar Named Desire. It's rare to hear such virtuosity paired with the gifts of a great entertainer." Chris Stuart, chart-topping songwriter and bluegrass journalist.
"Plenty of pickers play banjo, but very few can compose with the range, depth, beauty and creativity of Evans. His ability to pull from myriad sources for inspiration and distill elements of jazz, rock, classical, you-name-it down to their essential truths, and spin those truths into beguiling bluegrass compositions and riveting banjo solos places him in the ranks of the greats." David Royko, Chicago Tribune
Plus, they’re funny, very funny.

ROBBY LONGLEY...is an amazingly talented and personable musician. The title of this review should really be Hands of Glory because that is exactly what Robby Longley has. Robby’s neo-classical/flamenco guitar filled the Center and each of us lucky enough to be at tonight’s concert with sheer wonder. Robby didn’t play music, he channeled music. The music came from his very essence and filled the space and each listener with awe as his fingers blurred across the guitar. “Evangeline”, named for the Longfellow poem, was a musical tour de force. Robby swept us up into the music and we were still in another world when the final note died away. “Bourbon St. Burlesque” had us believing were in New Orleans with a bass rhythm that was finger-snapping. Plus...DANI CARROLL....Rarely does a rising star shoot beyond universal boundaries, mystically shimmering through all musical genres. From the speakeasies of the 40’s to the honkytonks of yesteryear, a voice glimmers through the veil and offers a versatility sure to astound. A voice that silences audiences with the first whispery note, Dani Carroll is that star. Dani is revisiting her first love, Jazz, with a CD release this Spring. This CD is much anticipated and many times requested by her fans across the country who have had the good fortune to hear her drop a Torch vocal or two into the mix at the Bluebird Cafe and other venues from Nashville to California.

DOUG MACLEOD.... Excellent. Good humor and draws a big crowd. blues, storytelling, humor. Guitar & Voice. Master of the acoustic Blues “Doug MacLeod, now there’s a man who can really play the Blues!”
– David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, Delta Blues Legend
Doug MacLeod is one of the last remaining Bluesmen who learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life, and now continues to carry forward that valuable tradition. Within the Blues world, MacLeod is known for his quality recordings which feature superb songwriting, guitar wizardry and warm soulful vocals and for his wit and unforgettable live performances.
Whether picking or playing bottleneck on his guitar, MacLeod’s relentless right hand, with its churning bass and intricate finger-picking, prompted James Jensen of Acoustic Guitar Magazine to write, “Real excitement is created by MacLeod’s highly rhythmic acoustic guitar.” Besides being a heart-wrenchingly powerful live performer, Doug is also an extremely gifted storyteller and songwriter. His songs are borne from experience. He entertains and draws his audience closer by telling the stories that inspired the songs.
His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King, Albert Collins, Coco Montoya, Joe Louis Walker, and Eva Cassidy. His music is also heard on many TV movies and on the hit show “In the Heat of the Night.” It’s no wonder that when Doug was the host of the show, “Nothin’ But The Blues” on KKJZ Radio Los Angeles

THE MIGHTY ECHOES.... Bob Stane Says: “Grab this show”. The Mighty Echoes are an award-winning A Cappella quartet specializing in the “Doo-Wop” sound of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Their repertoire includes the classics of that era plus an eclectic mix of contemporary material. This is a “pure fun” act; not only are they thrilling to hear singing but are as funny as a comedy troupe. The Echoes are solid faves here.
The Mighty Echoes began singing at a store front theatre in L. A.’s Silverlake District in 1986. Individually, they are: Charlie Davis, a native New Yorker whose low bass is deep as an ocean trench. He was the voice of God on TV’s Power Rangers. Second tenor John Lathan, the newest Echo, has performed on Broadway and at the Apollo in Harlem. First tenor Jon Rubin, also the lead singer of the teen idol band The Rubinoos, has thrilled audiences worldwide with his soaring tenor. Mellifluous baritone Harvey Shield, who started as a drummer in Swinging 60’s London, is also an accomplished songwriter as exemplified by his composition “The Way I Feel Tonight,” an International hit for The Bay City Rollers.

SONGS OF SHILOH plus SABRINA & CRAIG.....
(From The Bower Family) Hi Bob, Thanks for bringing back Songs of Shiloh. It is one of the reasons your venue is the best around. This act is great! The songs take you through the life of a young waitress with struggles and dreams that all generations have experienced. These songs are very well written and original. Nicole Gordon is stunning in her vocal talent and delivery. Marty Axelrod is excellent on the keyboards. The Songs of Shiloh is the very best of the Southern California music scene. If you haven't heard them you are missing out. These songs have haunted me. Thanks again for booking them. Kerry and Pat Bower
SONGS OF SHILOH....Songs of Shiloh is a concept album created by songwriters Marty Axelrod and Nicole Gordon. In early 2005, Los Angeles based songwriters Axelrod and Gordon, met as members of a songwriters' group and wound up writing their first song together, "Got The Car Running." They liked the idea of the girl in their song so much, that they decided to continue writing songs about her. A few months into the writing process and through exploring different aspects of this girl's small-town life, they decided to name her Shiloh and by September 2006, they had a 10-song portrait of Shiloh, a girl who faces the challenges of her life with humor and courage. Plus...Sabrina & Craig...Sabrina & Craig. With over 75 years of musical experience between us, we came together to share our love of music, precise and poetic guitar voicings, complex harmonies, and heartfelt connection. If you like variety, we've got a great combination of original songs and unique covers that we can't wait to share with you.
"… keeping the tradition of contemporary folk music alive and well in a very pure form, with wry, thoughtful observations of a life rich with experience and passion. Honest-to-goodness Folk artists, real ‘humdinger folksingers!’, as Dylan would say."

PIERRE BENSUSAN....PIERRE BENSUSAN'S WORLD Solo Performer, Electro-acoustic Guitar, Voice
If "world music" is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms, traditional instruments and harmonic colors, Pierre Bensusan can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and diverse world musicians of our time. One look at Bensusan on-stage, barring chords while stretching five, sometimes six frets, is usually enough to make even the most well-versed jazz afficionado stop in their tracks. As technically impressive as is the simultaneous execution of a colorful melody, an active bass line, unique harmonic choices, and eclectic rhythms, it is the music that Bensusan hears that drives the mechanics of his body. There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. Freedom is Bensusan and the music he channels without any apparent musical boundaries.

In October they were “etherial” and “Orchestral.” They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.
You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.
