8/25/18 - Burgan & Chan with Special Guest Jeremy Burgan

Don’t look now but our roots are showing. Wait long enough and everything old is new again – or fades into a historical footnote!

The Classic Folk-To-We Five Experience

In response to local fans clamoring for another Burgan & Chan Songs & Stories fix, Jerry and Debbie Burgan — along with bassist Tholow Chan and their son, Jeremy Burgan — will be making a special matinee appearance at the Coffee Gallery Backstage.

This gifted band of graduates from the folk era who became innovators in folk-rock and Americana, always bring a full bag of classics, originals, and a few surprises to the magically intimate Coffee Gallery Backstage listening room. Theme of the show is the Classic Folk-To-We Five Experience.

Folk music of the late 1950’s and early 60’s influenced everyone from the Beatles and the Beach Boys, to Elvis and Bob Dylan. The wave of artists they inspired eventually changed the course of popular music throughout the world. Tribute acts are a mainstay of summer concerts for scratching the itch of classic music fans whose favorite artists no longer tour. While they may be fun and a convenient way for later generations to hear music from other eras played live…they’re nothing like experiencing an original when played by those who lived it.

Jerry Burgan has been scratching that itch since co-founding a folk group in 1959 with his partner, the late Michael Stewart. Encouraged by Michael’s brother, John Stewart (of Kingston Trio fame), they began stretching the limits of folk to include jazz, pop, and rock. Their exploration produced a name change to We Five, and an iconic, chart-topping, folk-rock arrangement of Sylvia Tyson’s, You Were On My Mind. It earned them a Grammy Nomination for Best Performance By A Vocal Group in 1965, and was Billboard’s #4 record of the year—between a couple of other innovative hits: Satisfaction at #3, and You’ve Lost The Lovin Feeling at #5!

With a starting time of 2:00 o’clock, fans who first heard Tom Dooley on an AM radio can take in a full concert and still be done in time for an ‘early bird’ dinner special after the show. For those who never heard of The Kingston Trio, it’s a chance to experience the grass roots magic of folk and American in a charming environment. There will be no campfire or s’mores, but you’ll find state of the art electronic candles flickering behind the stage lights as you get lost in the songs and stories. Singing along on the choruses is encouraged.
